Beit Shmuel is where our values find a home, and our spirit finds its voice in the heart of Jerusalem.

What is Beit Shmuel?

A vibrant cultural, educational, and hospitality center in the heart of Jerusalem, Beit Shmuel serves as the global headquarters of the World Union for Progressive Judaism, it is a home for dialogue, creativity, and connection.

With breathtaking views of the Old City, Beit Shmuel offers a unique blend of history and modernity, featuring world-class educational programs, cultural events, and a welcoming guesthouse.

It is a place where ideas are exchanged, traditions are honored, and the future of Progressive Judaism is shaped.

The Case for a Campaign Now

Fifty years after the establishment of WUPJ’s headquarters in Jerusalem, the time to refurbish and reinvigorate the worldwide Reform and Progressive movement’s international center is now.

To advance a new Progressive narrative of Israel-Diaspora relations.

To expand the reach of Progressive Jewish values such as democracy and diversity.

To ensure the future of Progressive Judaism by establishing a dedicated venue in Jerusalem for culture, belief, and leadership development.

To leave a lasting personal legacy of commitment to Progressive Judaism in our homeland for future generations to witness and feel.

Thanks to Rabbi Richard Hirsch z”l, Reform Judaism found a home in Jerusalem and a voice in the
global Jewish conversation

Rabbi Richard Hirsch z”l was a transformative leader whose legacy shaped the Reform Movement and global Jewish life.
As founding director of the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (RAC) in Washington, D.C., he anchored the Reform Movement in the American civil rights struggle, hosting the drafting of key legislation and marching alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

In 1973, Rabbi Hirsch moved to Israel and led the World Union for Progressive Judaism (WUPJ) for over 25 years. His bold decision to relocate its headquarters to Jerusalem anchored the global Reform Movement in the heart of the Jewish people. Under his leadership, the WUPJ expanded worldwide, uniting communities and strengthening Progressive Judaism on every continent.

Known as the “architect of Reform Zionism,” Rabbi Hirsch was instrumental in founding ARZA (Association of Reform Zionists of America), ARZENU (the global Reform Zionist umbrella), establishing the IMPJ (Israel Reform Movement) and the Reform kibbutzim, and founding Beit Shmuel–Mercaz Shimshon, the WUPJ's headquarters and cultural center in Jerusalem.

He and his beloved wife, Bella Hirsch z”l, were inseparable partners in life and mission. Her presence and support deeply shaped his work with the WUPJ. Together, they raised four children and saw their family flourish.

"Celebrate WUPJ's centennial and 50 years in Jerusalem by revitalizing Beit Shmuel, ensuring it remains a thriving global hub and a beacon of Progressive Judaism."

Rabbi Sergio Bergman, President of WUPJ
